(Dubuque, Iowa – September 30, 2024) – Schmitt Island Development Corporation (SID) invites the public to partake in a number of activities planned for the 2nd Annual Autumn Adventure on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Dubuque’s Chaplain Schmitt Island. This is a free family event suitable for all ages that aims to celebrate the history of the city-owned island and showcase future plans for the property.
Through guided tours, interactive exhibits and fun activities, Autumn Adventure attendees will discover existing attractions and local businesses, as well as plans for future amenities on Schmitt Island. Other organizations participating in this year’s Autumn Adventure event include DRA/Q Casino + Resort/Island Social, ImOn Arena, Travel Dubuque, Trolleys of Dubuque, American Lady, City of Dubuque Rec N Roll, Loras College Athletics, Veterans Freedom Center & Dubuque Women’s Warriors, YP Dubuque and Crescent Community Health. Food trucks will also be available from Elle & Becks, Versus and Koppes Kreations.
“This event was created to highlight what Schmitt Island has to offer and also generate enthusiasm for its potential,” explained Kathy Buhr, who is SID’s Board Chair, as well as Vice President of Human Resources and Continuous Improvement for DRA and Q Casino + Resort. “We want to build upon the momentum that has been generated so far, continue our efforts to foster community pride in Schmitt Island, and encourage a shared vision for what is possible when it comes to future growth.”

• Island Activity – Participants can explore different points of interest on Schmitt Island and visit booths to gather answers for a crossword puzzle.
• Food Trucks – Food trucks will be available from Elle & Becks, Versus and Koppes Kreations.
• Guided Tours – Discover the city’s history and hidden gems on a guided tour with Trolleys of Dubuque.
• Interactive Exhibits – Visit with other organizations and dive into interactive exhibits that highlight the island's potential and exciting plans for the future.
• Sightseeing Cruise – Do not miss an opportunity to experience the river from the deck of the American Lady. One hundred (100) lucky attendees will get to take a free sightseeing cruise at 3:30 p.m. Sign-up is first-come, first-serve, so come early and make sure to secure your spot!
“Schmitt Island is already home to a number of things to do – everything from ImOn Ice Arena and summer concerts to various outdoor activities and all that Q Casino + Resort has to offer – but it is exciting to be able to share what the future plans are for the island,” said Mandy Miller, Manager of Strategic Philanthropy for DRA. “The overall goal is to transform Schmitt Island into a destination-type attraction that offers a variety of entertainment and leisure activities for both residents and visitors. Given this, anything we can do to help generate excitement about the long-range plans for the island are important.”
