On Tuesday, October 11, John T. Pregler will be at River Lights Bookstore, 1098 Main St., Dubuque IA to introduce his work, Historic Tales of Old Dubuque, released by The History Press on October 10.
Historic Tales of Old Dubuque explores key periods of Dubuque’s history from the 19th Century, illustrating how these events shaped not only Dubuque, but the nation as a whole.
Among the six history-shaping vignettes Pregler explores are the life of railroad attorney Abraham Lincoln as he pays a visit to Dubuque prior to becoming President, the Congressional debate on whether U.S. Representative William Vandever had the right to hold a seat in Congress while also holding a commission in the U.S. military during the Civil War, and the impactful, controversial visits to Dubuque between 1865 and 1870 by Frederick Douglas, abolitionist and suffragist.
John is an independent researcher, historian and author born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa, where his family has resided since the 1840s. John has been studying local and regional history of national importance for as long as he can remember and started conducting research and collecting information on a variety of topics, including several in his book, starting in the late 1970s when he learned two of his great-great-grandfathers and a great-great-great-uncle served in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 in Iowa military units. And the rest, as they say, is history.
