A total of 37 residents and hotel guests were displaced

DUBUQUE – The Five Flags Center will serve as an emergency shelter for residents and guests of the Canfield Hotel who were displaced by a fire on Wednesday night. According to the Dubuque Fire Department, the fire began in a fourth floor room at around 8:25 PM Wednesday. Smoke and flames were seen coming out of a window on the fourth floor. A total of 37 residents and hotel guests were displaced, and about two dozen have taken up shelter inside the Five Flags Center so far. Residents likely won’t be able to return to the hotel for at least a few days.

The Dubuque chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. “Red Cross volunteers and staff were on the scene to help those affected by this fire,” said Pami Erickson, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Eastern Iowa. “The Red Cross of Eastern Iowa will continue to support those affected. We are thankful for our partnership with the Five Flags Center during this time as we assist those who were displaced by the fire.”

Included in the services the Red Cross is providing is financial assistance, which will help the displaced residents find continuing housing. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to the American Red Cross can contact their Dubuque office by calling 563-583-6451 or visiting RedCross.org.
