Dubuque, IA — Chad Wolbers, President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, today presented Dr. Andrew Vanderheyden M.D., with the Dr. John Finley Excellence in Medicine Award. The award recognizes overall excellence in medical care by a physician who embodies the mission, vision and values of Finley Hospital as selected by their physician, board and hospital colleagues. The presentation of the award, which honors the legacy of Dubuque’s first general physician, coincided with the annual observance of Doctors Day, March 30.
Dr. Vanderheyden serves as a pathologist as well as being UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital’s Medical Staff President. He was nominated for his leadership, professionalism, expertise, and more by Chad Wolbers, President and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Dubuque.

Quotable:
“Dr. Vanderheyden has had a remarkable few years as a member of our medical staff, both as a pathologist and as a leader. He served a critical role as a key physician leader throughout the pandemic given the weight placed up our facility in regard to COVID testing. He helped us navigate through this necessary dimension of the crisis with a tremendous degree of intellect, poise and integrity. As our Medical Staff President the past two years, Dr. Vanderheyden has leaned in to lead us through many challenging issues with a great deal of professionalism and courage. He is generous with his expertise and time as our lab medical director, a member of Credentials Committee, participant of several strategic workstreams and as an ad hoc member of Finley’s Board of Directors. For all of these reasons and more, Dr. Vanderheyden is certainly deserving of the Dr. John Finley Award.” – Chad Wolbers, President and CEO, UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital
“Dr. Vanderheyden is very deserving of this award. He continued as the Medical Director of the laboratory through our most recent challenging times, which included an ownership change and a pandemic. He was put on the spot when our quality of work was under scrutiny during our transition period and mediated between the ordering providers and the lab staff. Laboratories were also put in the spotlight with COVID testing, and he lent his expertise on many occasions when the lab was asked infectious disease testing questions. He is there for me and our team members for technical lab test questions, but he is also there when we just need someone to listen to our concerns and guide us with sound reasoning.” – Sheila Dunn, UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital Laboratory Director
