A local designer’s handiwork will find its way into thousands of baseball fans’ closets later this year.
Haley Hurst, a graphic designer at Envision Sports in Dubuque, recently was named winner of a Milwaukee Brewers “Fan-Shirt Friday” contest. The first 20,000 fans through Miller Park’s gates on Friday, June 16, will receive a shirt adorned with her work.
Success came as a surprise to Hurst, a longtime Brewers fan and 2016 graduate of University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
“I was actually really shocked,” she said. “I didn’t think I was going to win it. It felt really good.”
Shirts with Hurst’s design only will be available to those at the ballpark for the game against the San Diego Padres. But she will get 50 copies for herself, along with four tickets to a game and the chance to attend batting practice on the field with players.
Hurst submitted her design after someone passed along a link to the contest website. Fans were asked to pick their favorite from several dozen possibilities.
“I was invited to go to the Brewers’ ‘On-Deck’ event,” Hurst said. “When I got backstage, they told me I won.”
Hurst is behind the designs on apparel for several local sporting teams and organizations.
“I do a lot of designs for a lot of little leagues, so I kind of pulled some inspiration from some of those,” she said.
Tom Rauen, Envision’s owner, said Hurst’s success will increase the business’ profile nationally.
“It’s great,” he said. “All of our designers here are super talented. So to see them take something they’re passionate about outside of Dubuque and apply what we do here is pretty great to see.”
Rauen noted Hurst’s success was fueled by support from local people and on social media.
Her victory was “pretty remarkable with the number of entries that were entered into the contest,” he said.
