20 Year Partnership Leads Participants to Volunteer or Career Opportunities at Finley Hospital

Dubuque, IA— 2019 marks the twentieth year UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital has been partnering with Exploring Dubuque’s Career Exploration program. Exploring Dubuque, a program of the Boys Scouts of America Northeast Iowa Council, aims to help students make informed decisions about career opportunities in our community.

At UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital, students experience the work being done in the hospital first hand during hour long tours conducted monthly. An introduction to the hospital begins with volunteer services, before moving on to tours of a wide range of fields including surgery, Wendt Regional Cancer Center, laboratory, and pharmacy.

“Often, when we have people come through the Exploring Program they do become volunteers at the hospital after seeing the important work being done,” said Jolene Koopmann, Manager of Volunteer Services at UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital. “It is a win-win to see the program come full circle here at Finley as some of the students have become employees after finishing their education.”

Students have an opportunity to interact with professionals from the various services and ask questions leading to networking, communication skills, and mentors.

“One of the biggest pieces of feedback I hear is how important it is that students can use this opportunity to ask specific questions. They are able to gain a mentorship from professionals in the field and have an interactive experience,” adds Melissa Neuhaus, Exploring/Marketing Executive with Boys Scouts of America Northeast Iowa Council. “They get the chance to gain firsthand experience in the atmosphere; seeing things in-person versus seeing them in a textbook can make a big difference.”

Exploring Dubuque opens the door for students to organizations and businesses like Finley Hospital and allows students to be more proactive about future opportunities in their hometown.
