Who?
Harley V. Pothoff, married to Sherry Pothoff with 3 adult children. I retired from the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office as the Road Patrol Captain after serving 33 years. I am a Moderate Republican that believes in working together to achieve our goals. One of my top prioritize has been, and will continue to be, Public Safety. The best way to continue to grow our population, retain local talent, and attract new businesses is to provide a safe community that people want to relocate to, or stay in.
Why?
I am seeking a 2nd term as Supervisor to continue working for the Citizen’s of Dubuque County. When I took office back in January 2021 we were in the midst of the Covid pandemic. I feel good leadership in the County got us through the pandemic and got our businesses back up and running. We received ARPA funds that we distributed throughout the County and offered low/no interest loans to businesses to keep them open. We have moved Dubuque and Dubuque County forward and I would like to continue working towards growing our Community.
What?
There are several projects that are on the cusp of moving Dubuque and Dubuque County business forward. We recently were able to secure daily flights to Chicago from our Dubuque Regional Airport, The Field of Dreams Stadium Project is moving forward and The Chaplin Schmitt Island Projects all will bring tourist to our area that bolster our local economy and help
our local business, along with spurring economic development.
How you intend to represent the business community?
Having managed a small business for the past 24 years I realize how important small and large businesses are to our communities and our economic growth and development. I intend to help businesses expand or relocate to our area whenever possible. We need to work together to attract and retain workforce that our local businesses can continue to grow.
What should the government’s role in business entail?
I believe the government’s role is to promote expansion and help in attracting new businesses to our area. The less restrictions on expansions the better. We do have to maintain a balance for environmental safety and proper land use but we also have to be willing to work with businesses to achieve their goals without undo interference. Showcasing Dubuque and Dubuque County as a community works together, is progressive, and welcoming to prospective new businesses.
