Who?
I am a dedicated and experienced educator, holding a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Iowa, a master’s degree in gifted education, and a doctorate degree in educational leadership from the University of Northern Iowa. I have taught students in kindergarten through graduate school and served as an elementary school administrator. Additionally, I have worked in the fitness industry as a personal trainer and instructor.
Why?
I felt compelled to run because our current Republican majority has assaulted our freedoms and is dismantling our public education system. They are not transparent in their actions and seem to have no obligation for accountability. They have voted against the interests of the majority and lack the desire to do so. I am happy that I have this opportunity, and I will represent my district with transparency and accountability.
What?
My biggest concerns for Iowans are the rollback of freedoms and disinvestment in education.
Workers’ rights have been gutted. Women no longer have bodily autonomy. People can discriminate against others if they cite religious beliefs. I would work to reverse laws that deprive Iowans of their rights. We have been defunding education for over a decade and have opened the door for private takeover and corruption in our educational system. Private schools have a place in our communities, but I do not believe that public money should be diverted to cover the cost. I will work to strengthen public education.
How you intend to represent the business community?
I think that supporting local businesses of all sizes is essential. Incentives
and programs should focus on those businesses that hire locally, pay living
wages, and invest in our communities, as opposed to those businesses
that make decisions hundreds of miles away and focus more on profit than
providing quality goods and services.
What should the government’s role in business entail?
I think the government has a responsibility to keep communities safe and help them thrive. This entails a balance of ensuring that businesses are being good stewards of our environment without the burden of unreasonable laws/regulations. I think it is the responsibility of legislators to involve stakeholders before legislation is passed to avoid bills with costly and/or burdensome consequences. I also think that the government and businesses can partner to improve the quality of life for communities.
