Alicia Burds

YP Board President

What is your current position, and where do you work?
I am the Volunteer Coordinator for Olliewood Action Sports & Creative Services Manager at Learning A-Z.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I love to travel, hike, play board games, and go to concerts. I also love spending time on my family's farm, reading books, writing, and hanging out with family and friends.

Tell us about your family.
I have an incredible husband, Joey, that supports me in all my endeavors, pushes me to be a better person, and is one of the hardest working and fearless people I know. We are expecting our first baby in November. We also have a cat named Gertie, currently she rules our house and is just the cutest thing you ever did see!

What is one unique fact about you that many people may not know?
I have been writing a novel loosely based on my life since I was 17. It may never see the light of day publicly, but I will finish it...eventually!

Who is one person who inspires you, and why?
The person, well persons, who inspire me are my parents. They are two of the most hardworking individuals I have met. Their resilience in the face of any obstacle taught me from an early age that moving forward despite setbacks allows you to accomplish anything! My parents inspire me to do better each day, not dwell on the things we cannot change, and to never give up on my dreams.

Where is your favorite spot in Dubuque?
This is a tough one because there are so many places that I love in Dubuque! I spend a lot of time in the Millwork District. The history, shops, and restaurants are great! I also enjoy the local breweries. Each is so unique and has a different vibe that I love experiencing.

What do you enjoy most about being a YP member?
I most enjoy making connections with other young professionals and watching as we all make an impact on the Dubuque Community. You never know how a relationship you build through YP could change your future - it certainly helped mine.

What piece of advice would you give a new YP member?
Branch out! Try to learn one new person's name and a little about them at each event. You could meet some pretty amazing people that may lead you on your next adventure-both professionally and personally! It's easy to stay in our comfort zones, but it is important to branch out.
