By Scott McGuire, YP Immediate Past President

In 2009 my Wife, Emily, and I moved back to Dubuque from Iowa City. Emily had just graduated from Dental School at the University of Iowa (Go Hawks). For me, this meant that I was moving back to the home of my alma mater, Loras College (Go Duhawks).

I grew up in Algona, IA, and by local rules, that makes me a bit of an outsider. As a lifelong Dubuquer, Emily was often shocked and would ask how it seemed that I knew more people than she did when we would attend local events. When we moved back to Dubuque, I jumped into as many things as I could. One day while at a Chamber of Commerce meeting, I was lucky enough to meet a nice gentleman named Barry Gentry. That meeting led to a friendship. That introduction to Barry and the Chamber of Commerce led me to be heavily involved in the Dubuque Chamber Young Professionals group. Joining YP was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’ve made lifelong friends. I’ve introduced and shook hands with the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Mayor, CEOs, College Presidents, Business owners, local elected officials, and a bunch of awesome Young Professionals. My experience with the Dubuque Chamber YP helped me experience many of the things listed below and many others.

  • Chamber YP Days of Caring
  • Chamber Golf Committee
  • Chamber YP Board position
  • Chamber YP President
  • Chamber Ex-Officio Board member
  • Loras Young Alumni Board
  • Coaching youth baseball and basketball
  • 100+ Men Who Care Board member
  • MercyOne Foundation Board
  • Dubuque Country Club Board
  • Leadership Dubuque

I will always be grateful for the opportunities that YP has given me and the lessons I have learned along the way. My sincere thank you to Molly, Barry, Justine, and the rest of the Dubuque Chamber of Commerce. OP signing off.
