Dubuque, IA— UnityPoint Health ® - Finley Hospital has launched a new amputee support group for community members who have experienced limb loss. According to Amputee Coalition, there are nearly 2 million people living with limb loss in the United States. UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital works with patients on a daily basis that are experiencing limb loss due to lack of blood supply in a limb, a trauma, cancer or other diagnosis.

“From UnityPoint Health – Finley Hospital’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit to our pediatric and adult outpatient therapy programs, our team supports individuals every step of the way on their journey through the healing and rehabilitation process,” explains David Brandon, President and CEO of Finley Hospital.

The experience of losing a limb often happens quickly and is life-changing. It alters routines, hinders confidence and changes how one may look to the future. The Amputee Support Group, led by a Finley’s licensed physical therapist, was created with every amputee patient in mind, whether it be an old, new or planned amputation. The group focuses on being positive, utilizes compassion and encouragement to rebuild self-confidence and empowers amputees to return to a normal, independent and fruitful life.

Amputee Support Group meetings consist of a welcome and introductions, sharing of experiences since previous meetings and a time for socializing and developing friendships. Each meeting provides an open environment to ask questions, share stories and address challenges. Attendees will leave with new ideas on how to modify every day activities to make daily living easier. Meetings may also feature a guest speaker for a wide variety of topics including wheel chair consultation and prosthetics.

Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Kehl Diabetes Center’s Naylor Room. Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31.
