National Monument Visitor Center Winter Hours

HARPERS FERRY, IA – Beginning Sunday, October 24, the Effigy Mounds National Monument Visitor Center will shift to winters hours; these hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. central time, will remain in effect until May 29, 2022 (Memorial Day weekend).
In addition to shifting to winter hours, the park’s visitor center will be experiencing a temporary shortage of staff during the coming months. The visitor center, as a consequence, will be closed at least two days per week, Thursdays and Fridays, beginning November 11, as well as during other brief periods when staff are not available.
Despite these seasonal changes, the public is invited to visit and enjoy the park and all hiking trails from dawn until dusk every day. For visitors’ convenience, copies of the park brochure and trail map will be available in the breezeway outside the visitor center, where the north unit trails begin. Additionally, portable restrooms are provided in the parking lot for visitors’ use.
When park managers know with sufficient notice that the visitor center will be closed on days other than Thursdays or Fridays, information will be posted on the park’s website and Facebook page listed below. Staff also will post signs on the visitor center door.
Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on Highway 76. For more information, call (563) 873-3491, ext. 123, or visit the park's website at www.nps.gov/effigymounds or its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EffigyMounds
