Who?
My name is Joe Kennedy, and I am running for a third term as Dubuque County Sheriff. I have worked for the Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office for almost 24 years. I am a husband, father, and military veteran. I am a 1995 graduate of Wahlert high School and, excluding my military service, have been a lifelong resident of Dubuque County.
Why?
I am running to maintain the stable, consistent leadership the employees of the Sheriff’s Office and community members deserve. During my time with the Sheriff's Office, we have continually looked and new and inventive ways to provide security to the residents of Dubuque County. Although I am getting older, I am not done yet. I still have goals for the department that I wish to see realized before I eventually retire.
What?
I prioritize safety above all else. I want my employees to have the best training and equipment so they can protect our community. I also prioritize functionality. Everything we do must have a purpose, or end goal. The training and equipment we provide must be practical and functional to help the deputies serve the community in a professional, courteous, and efficient way.
How you intend to represent the business community?
In the past, we have provided training for local businesses in some of our disciplines. The primary trainings revolved around identifying and responding to workplace violence incidents, as well as identifying employees impaired on illicit substances or who are overmedicating on prescribed medication. We will continue to provide these trainings, as requested, and any other training subjects of which we are perceived as the local “experts”.
What should the government’s role in business entail?
Government should do the best they can to attract new business from outside our borders and encourage local small business entrepreneurship. Creating new business helps grow your tax base. This, in turn, allows government to provide more services.
