The port of dubuque & city sign

Welcome to Dubuque, Iowa

Known as the “Key City” to Irish and German immigrants who saw it as a gateway to the west, Dubuque is Iowa’s oldest city. It rests upon scenic bluffs, overlooking the Mississippi River with its abundance of natural resources.

When its first permanent settler, Julien Dubuque, arrived in 1785, he established a close relationship with the Meskwaki Indian tribe that led to a growing trade market, which attracted more settlers. After being chartered in 1837, the industry in Dubuque grew rapidly; initially known for fur trading and lead mining, settlers brought new business such as button making, boat construction, and mill working.

Today, Dubuque stands among the Mississippi River bluffs as a metropolitan service area for seven surrounding counties.
