The 39 Steps
Brodbeck Concert Hall - Center for the Arts, Platteville, WI

The 39 Steps is a play based on the 1935 film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock. The play’s concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage, but with a cast of four. One actor plays the hero, an actress plays the three women whom he has romantic entanglements with, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children, and even the occasional inanimate object (over 150 zany characters in all). This 20-time Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning treat is packed with nonstop laughs, an on-stage plane crash, handcuffs, missing fingers and some good old-fashioned romance!

This tragic love story is about a young Japanese Geisha who marries an American naval lieutenant. When he leaves for the States she holds out in hope of his return. She hasn't told him about their child. When he returns it is with his new American wife. Heartbroken, the geisha agrees to give up their child and after sending everyone away stabs herself choosing to die with honor rather than live in disgrace. The geisha's heartbreak is told through some of the most gorgeous music ever written. It continues to be the most frequently performed opera in the world.

Avenue Q
Brodbeck Concert Hall - Center for the Arts, Platteville, WI

Avenue Q is the smash-hit Broadway musical about real life in New York City, as told by a cast of people and puppets through a hilariously irreverent, Tony-winning book and score. Avenue Q tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who moves to NYC with big dreams and a tiny bank account. The only apartment that he can afford is way out on Avenue Q, where everyone’s looking for the same things he is: a decent job, a stable relationship, and a “purpose.” Princeton learns to embrace the ups and downs of city life and realizes that “the real world” isn’t so bad, after all!

DSO Presents Bach & Mozart
Five Flags Theater

The first half of the concert is all about Bach! After his Second Brandenburg Concerto the Dubuque Chorale joins the orchestra for Magnificat, one of Bach’s great chorale works requiring five soloists and a five-part choir.
The second half will feature Mozart’s “Jupiter” Symphony. Although Mozart was down and debt-ridden, he was determined to do something revolutionary. That comes in the finale when he uses five different melodies simultaneously, making it a challenge for any orchestra that takes it on. Concert is 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday.

Retreat Weekend: God, Jesus & Prayer in Today's Universe Story directed by Michael Morwood
Shalom Retreat Center, 1001 Davis St., Dubuque, IA

Christian tradition has carried two “stories” about God. One story has told of human isolation from God because of a “Fall,” the “theological story” of Jesus who won access to God in heaven. The other story reminds us that “God” is an everywhere reality beyond all human concepts. Jesus is revealer of this Presence in which we live and move and have our being. The goal of prayer is to deepen our awareness of this Presence and to challenge us to give the best possible human expression to it. We will use the contemporary “story” about our universe to deepen awareness and appreciation of God’s universal presence, to reflect on the role of Jesus as revealer of this Presence always with us, and to examine the implications for prayer and liturgy.

Mad Agnes is not one person, but three, and they're mad in only the most inventive way. Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders stir up elements of classical and folk, cross singer/songwriter poignancy with street-theatre smarts and infuse it all with courageous harmonies, complex counterpoint and rich storytelling in a powerful live performance. Their lyrics are intelligent, their delivery warm and insightful. Not surprisingly, each has arrived at the trio from a long list of solo accomplishments.

NONVIOLENT COMMUNICATION: A Language of Compassion
Shalom Retreat Center, 1001 Davis St., Dubuque, IA

6:30 – 9:30pm

Presenters: Pat R. Farrell OSF, MSW & Marian Klostermann OSF

NOTE: Both facilitators have presented workshops on this topic in this country and abroad.

Nonviolent communication (NVC) is a way of speaking that facilitates the
flow of communication needed to exchange information and resolve differences peacefully. Someone has said that the principles of NVC can literally change the world. They can also change the quality of life with one’s spouse, children, co-workers and anyone else with whom one interacts. Nonviolent communication focuses our attention on compassion as our motivation, rather than fear, guilt, blame or shame. It emphasizes taking personal responsibility for our choices and improving the quality of our relationships as our goal. It is effective even when the other person or group is not familiar with this process.

Offering: $10. Call 563/582-3592 to register by Monday, Sept. 13.
