Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez’s (Robert Downey Jr.) pressing need for story ideas leads him to Nathaniel Ayera (Jamie Foxx), a mentally ill, homeless street musician who possesses extraordinary talent, even on a two-stringed violin. Inspired by his story, Lopez writes an acclaimed series of articles about Ayers, the man and the musician. He also learns of the harsh realities of mental illness and the larger social injustices facing the homeless. Based on a true story.

This lecture series extends statewide programming in conjunction with the opening of the "Endless Possibilities," the new permanent exhibit of the African American Museum of Iowa. The interactive series will enhance and build upon information provided within the new exhibit. This lecture series was made possible by a grant from Humanities Iowa and in partnership with the Loras College Intercultural Office.

The Wisconsin Brass Quintet

The Wisconsin Brass Quintet is ensemble-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. The brass chamber music experience of the Wisconsin Brass Quintet is nationally recognized. Their musical expertise has been acknowledged by Verne Reynolds, Jan Bach, Karel Husa, John Harbison, Daron Hagen, and many other composers. They have performed throughout the Midwest as well as nationally, including performances at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall and Merkin Hall. The quintet's educational programs and master classes have been presented in such prestigious settings as the Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. They regularly perform radio broadcast concerts for Wisconsin Public Radio.

In honor of Black History Month, Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque will show the movie "Crash" on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in the 3rd Floor Auditorium. Admission and snacks are free, and open discussion will be encouraged after the show.

Oscar winner for Best Picture of 2005, "Crash" is a drama about racial tensions in Los Angeles after a car accident brings together a group of strangers. The movie is about two hours long and is rated R.

A Journey Through Black History told through Music

Leaders Jeanette Bell, Trish Jones, and Judith Wojcik have been facilitating women's retreats as a team for 10 years. All three women have been trained from adolescent through adult in grief counseling. Their current focus has been empowering women to become their authentic selves.

An Evening Of Magic

Heartland Festival Auditions!

Kids auditions will be from 2:30pm – 5pm for kids second grade through eighth grade in the fall 2010. Boys from 2:30-4 and girls from 4-5pm. No prepared song or reading is required for the kids audition. Kids will be taught a selection from Beauty & The Beast.

Adult auditions will begin on February 14th at 5pm. Roles are available for actor/singers of all ages. Participants are asked to prepare a short musical theatre selection, and a short comic reading of no more than 60 seconds each.

Obstacles to Peace between Israelis and Palestinians

Dr. Bailey will begin with a brief summary of the history of the conflict. Then from the standpoint of the Israelis, Palestinians and U.S. involvement, he will discuss what he sees to be the current obstacles to peace between these two Mid-East groups. There will be time for questions and answers. It promises to be an enlightening evening.

An “Ordinary” Lent: God uses the ordinary – bread, water, wine – to come to us. During the retreat we will reflect on some of the other ordinary things God uses to get our attention – sunsets and coffee – flowers and friends – and most especially the “ordinary” life of Jesus. Each day we will celebrate Eucharist and gather for two conferences. Includes daily Eucharistic Liturgy and two conferences. During the retreat we will also have a Communal Celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing.

UI Latin Jazz Ensemble with UI Alumni Reception

Join the UI Alumni Association for an afternoon of music, culture, and Hawkeye fellowship as the University of Iowa’s Latin Jazz Ensemble performs a free concert for the public. This event will feature faculty, staff, and student members of the UI School of Music. Directly following the performance, the UI Alumni Association will host a reception with the Jazz Ensemble and James Dreier, UI associate professor of music, who will answer questions and discuss upcoming plans for the department.

The UI Latin Jazz Ensemble is one of the premier ensembles from the jazz department. Under the direction of James Dreier, the group performs and studies the vast Latin/jazz genre, including artists such as Tito Puente, Chucho Valdés, Eddie Palmieri, and Victor Mendoza.
